I cried in four or five places.<\/p>\n<p>(*) Some scenes awakened the &#8220;Evlad\u0131 Fatihan&#8221; in me.<\/p>\n<p>(*) In some scenes, I cried when I remembered my father&#8217;s words, &#8220;Son, this is our last homeland. We have nowhere else to go.&#8221; I cried in moments when he reminded me of his will as a Rumeli immigrant, and made my patriotic side, which rejected Red Crescentism, proud.<\/p>\n<p>When I was leaving the hall, the most sincere feeling I had was this:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I needed this movie&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why I wanted to tell you what I learned about this movie the previous evening and the scenes that impressed me.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s going to be a bit long&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>But I think you&#8217;ll be interested&#8230;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h3>Could be the most expensive production in the history of Turkish cinema<\/h3>\n<p>We heard the cost of the movie for the first time from the mouths of its producers <strong>Saner Ayar<\/strong> and<strong> Hakan Karamahmuto\u011flu<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>16.5 million dollars&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>It may be small for Hollywood, but it is a big number for Turkey and even Europe.<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t imagine how this money will be extracted.<\/p>\n<h3>The movie was first offered to HBO<\/h3>\n<p>The movie was first offered to HBO, the most popular production company in the world.<\/p>\n<p>They were warmly welcomed.<\/p>\n<p>When HBO gave up on entering Turkey due to the crisis in the &#8220;streaming market&#8221; and stopped local productions in most of the countries outside the US, it was abandoned.<\/p>\n<p>Then <strong>Disney<\/strong>, who had come to Turkey, stepped in.<\/p>\n<p>However, when Disney, like HBO, started to experience financial difficulties in streaming, they also stopped local productions.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media-cdn.t24.com.tr\/media\/library\/2023\/09\/1694827767736-screenshot-53.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"390\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>October 29th in Turkey, early November across Europe<\/h3>\n<p>After these developments, the producers made a bold decision to release the movie all over the world.<\/p>\n<p>The movie is in two parts. We watched the first episode last night. This was from Atat\u00fcrk&#8217;s childhood to the beginning of the Gallipoli War.<\/p>\n<p>The first part of the film will be shown on Fox TV on the evening of October 29, on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic.<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>In Turkey and 30 other countries in early November<\/p>\n<p>The next schedule is as follows:<\/p>\n<p>(*) It will be released in Turkish cinemas on November 3 and in 30 countries in November.<\/p>\n<p>(*) The second film will be released on January 5 and then again in 30 countries.<\/p>\n<p>(*) Both movies will be broadcast on Fox TV in Summer 2024.<\/p>\n<p>(*) They are also in talks with Amazon and Netflix to broadcast it in 6 episodes.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h3>45-minute segments filmed in &#8220;magic light&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p>The most interesting information I learned from the producers was this.<\/p>\n<p>Especially the \u00c7anakkale scenes of the film were shot in what filmmakers call &#8220;Magic Light&#8221;, the two 45 minutes when the light is at its best.<\/p>\n<p>These moments were &#8220;45 minutes each&#8221; during sunrise and sunset.<\/p>\n<p>For this, the actors start preparing after midnight. They&#8217;re doing test shoots. And in those 45 minutes, there was actual filming.<\/p>\n<h3>3,000 real soldiers, 1,500 real weapons<\/h3>\n<p>3,000 real people acted as soldiers in the battle scenes of the movie.<\/p>\n<p>For a person who has seen the battle scenes in <strong>Christopher Nolan<\/strong>&#8216;s &#8220;Dunkerk&#8221;, it is almost impossible to be satisfied with the battle scenes in any other movie.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Digital duplication&#8221; technique was not used in the movie Atat\u00fcrk.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, 3,000 different people acted as soldiers.<\/p>\n<p>The two digitally constructed scenes were the British warships at Gallipoli and the train at Sirkeci station.<\/p>\n<p>1,500 real weapons were used in the movie.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media-cdn.t24.com.tr\/media\/library\/2023\/09\/1694827270975-2538650-1920-x-1080.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Atat\u00fcrk&#8217;s ties and the secret of his wardrobe<\/h3>\n<p>All my life I have admired Atat\u00fcrk&#8217;s style of dressing.<\/p>\n<p>The fabrics, cut and sewing of the dresses, especially the Neapolitan-style fine workmanship on the jacket collars always attracted my attention.<\/p>\n<p>But what caught my attention most of all was their ties and the way they tied them.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve never seen anyone tie a tie as well as he does.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why my eyes were always on his clothes in the movie.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll tell you right away, it was very successful.<\/p>\n<h3>Wool from Australia, yarn in Kayseri, dyeing in U\u015fak, sewing in Istanbul<\/h3>\n<p>Special wool was imported from Australia to make the thicker fabrics of that period.<\/p>\n<p>This wool was spun into yarn in Kayseri.<\/p>\n<p>Painted in Usak<\/p>\n<p>Fabric was produced from these yarns and sewn in Istanbul.<\/p>\n<p>Another thing that caught my attention was that the tie was tied a bit loosely in many scenes in the movie.<\/p>\n<p>Whereas in his photographs we always saw tightly tied ties.<\/p>\n<p>Gamze Ku\u015f is the costume designer.<\/p>\n<p>Now let me come to the movie itself and the people who made it&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3>Atat\u00fcrk on one side and K\u0131van\u00e7 Tatl\u0131tu\u011f on the other<\/h3>\n<p>For me, the person who did the most heavy lifting in this movie was <strong>Aras Bulut<\/strong>who played Atat\u00fcrk&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>He had these challenges ahead of him.<\/p>\n<p>There was a historical character like Atat\u00fcrk who had become legendary, untouchable and whose human side had been left behind.<\/p>\n<p>Secondly, in the past, giant Shakespearean actors such as <strong>Lawrence Olivier, Kenneth Branagh<\/strong> and <strong>Sean Connery<\/strong> were considered worthy of this role.<\/p>\n<p>In Turkey, almost 80 percent of the public had an image of <strong>K\u0131van\u00e7 Tatl\u0131tu\u011f<\/strong> in their minds.<\/p>\n<p>And the producer and the director gave this job to a 33-year-old young man.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media-cdn.t24.com.tr\/media\/library\/2023\/09\/1694827421178-fb-64-ea-08-e-40-f-46-cf-abd-5-feb-6-c-22-b-55-b-8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"486\" height=\"514\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Aras! Don&#8217;t try to play Ataturk, you will be crushed<\/h3>\n<p>I have to admit, when the first trailer for the movie was released last spring, I was disappointed.<\/p>\n<p>The trailer showed Atat\u00fcrk climbing over the trenches at Gallipoli in the first scene of the movie.<\/p>\n<p>That scene seemed very theatrical to me and I said, &#8220;It&#8217;s not right.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I was wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Aras Bulut has done this very well.<\/p>\n<p>Together with the producer, screenwriter and director of the movie, he spent months talking to historians.<\/p>\n<p>But the most important thing was when the director took him aside and said:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Don&#8217;t try to play Aras Atat\u00fcrk. You will be crushed under him. In this movie, you are playing &#8216;Mustafa&#8217; as written in the script. Try to play him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I think it is a very good warning.<\/p>\n<h3>I had a very hard time in the parts where we describe emotional moments.<\/h3>\n<p>After the movie, we chatted with Aras Bulut at dinner.<\/p>\n<p>My daughter <strong>Smile<\/strong> is a television producer. I often hear from him. Aras Bulut is a very popular and admired actor in producer circles.<\/p>\n<p>He is aware of the difficulty of the job he has taken on&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Because I have such a strong Atat\u00fcrk in my own head,&#8221; he says&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Despite all his success, he knows that he will receive a lot of criticism from some fanatical Atat\u00fcrkists and liberals who say &#8220;Atat\u00fcrk should also be criticized&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>I asked him about the most difficult scenes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I had a hard time with his emotional moments. The way he looked at his mother, his relationship with his sister, his loneliness, his momentary anger,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, <strong>Mehmet G\u00fcnsur<\/strong>plays Atat\u00fcrk&#8217;s father <strong>Ali R\u0131za Efendi<\/strong>, <strong>Song\u00fcl \u00d6den<\/strong>plays his mother <strong>Z\u00fcbeyde Han\u0131m<\/strong>, <strong>Sarp Akkaya<\/strong>plays <strong>Enver Pasha<\/strong>and <strong>Esra Bilgi\u00e7<\/strong>plays <strong>Madame Corinne<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>How ready are we to see a mischievous, anxious, aspirational Atat\u00fcrk?<\/h3>\n<p>He is quite right.<\/p>\n<p>Because it&#8217;s not that hard to play the clich\u00e9d aspects of a legendary personality.<\/p>\n<p>But as for the human side underneath it&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The biggest challenge is whether we, as Atat\u00fcrk&#8217;s fans, are ready to see his deepest human side&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not so sure&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>That Atat\u00fcrk had worries, desires, weaknesses as much as we do, and most importantly, that he had a mischievous side, that when he had his first photo taken with his friends in his military uniform, he teased them like a high school kid of today&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3>Atat\u00fcrk&#8217;s director turned out to be the screenwriter of my favorite movie<\/h3>\n<p>Mehmet Ada \u00d6ztekin, the director of the movie, was sitting next to me at the dinner after the movie.<\/p>\n<p>I had a long conversation with him.<\/p>\n<p>It turned out that he was the screenwriter of one of my favorite films in Turkish cinema, &#8220;The Losers Club&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>I had seen that movie many times like &#8220;The Big Lebowski&#8221; and I always enjoyed it the same way.<\/p>\n<p>I admired your script.<\/p>\n<p>Going from there to directing a movie like Atat\u00fcrk is a really interesting career trajectory&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>When he was offered this movie, his opinion was the same as mine.<\/p>\n<p>It is very difficult, if not impossible, to make &#8220;an Atat\u00fcrk movie in this country&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>As I said, he handled it well.<\/p>\n<h3>In the first 20 minutes of the movie, I realized that my suspicions were right<\/h3>\n<p>The first 20 minutes of the movie gave me the feeling of &#8220;I was right in my suspicions&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The part about Atat\u00fcrk&#8217;s childhood and his relationship with his father Ali R\u0131za Efendi and mother Z\u00fcbeyde Han\u0131m was a bit theatrical.<\/p>\n<p>But it is in the part of Atat\u00fcrk&#8217;s life after he graduated from the Monastir Military Idadisi that we begin to see the real Mustafa Kemal.<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h3>Scenes in the movie that left me confused<\/h3>\n<p>Don&#8217;t worry, I won&#8217;t spoil your viewing pleasure by going into too much detail about the movie.<\/p>\n<p>But I will share a few personal feelings.<\/p>\n<p>I will write about the scenes that affected me the most in the movie in the order of their impact:<\/p>\n<p>(*) The scene where his sister <strong>Makbule<\/strong>wins his heart&#8230;There is the way he hugs his sister and especially the way he pinches her nose between his two fingers&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Older boys who have a sister understand her very well&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>It made me cry<\/p>\n<p>(*) The dance scene in Sofia: Arriving late to a reception in Sofia dressed as a janissary and on purpose, surprising everyone, meeting and dancing with <strong>Dimitrina Kovachev<\/strong>, going to the opera together, listening to Carmen&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Atat\u00fcrk, like <strong>Sultan Abd\u00fclhamid<\/strong>, was a fan of opera.<\/p>\n<p>(*) The scene in Tripoli when he had a conversation with <strong>\u00d6mer Muhtar<\/strong>, a teacher and one of the leaders of the Arab tribes with whom he was going to fight against the Italians, and he said, &#8220;Come on, let&#8217;s have dinner together with the children we will send to die tomorrow&#8221;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>(*) And his &#8220;I promise you death and victory&#8221; speech to the soldiers who were freezing cold before the Battle of \u00c7anakkale in Thrace&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I cried a lot in those scenes&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h3>Another detail that impressed me a lot: Atat\u00fcrk and his dog Alp<\/h3>\n<p>In the movie, Atat\u00fcrk&#8217;s love for animals is also portrayed in a very impressive and emotional way.<\/p>\n<p>When he brought home a kitten he found on the street one evening in Thessaloniki as a child.<\/p>\n<p>Taking in a puppy she found in Sofia.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that he named him <strong>Alp<\/strong> and took him with him even in the Gallipoli War&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>They were images that made one love Atat\u00fcrk even more&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Health to everyone who contributed&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Now let me give you some backstage information outside the first screening.<\/p>\n<h3>Backstage 1: Decisions taken at the meeting with the Minister in Bodrum<\/h3>\n<p>After Disney Plus decided not to broadcast the series, Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Ersoy stepped in.<\/p>\n<p>Ministry Advisor <strong>Tayfun Topal<\/strong> did it first.<\/p>\n<p>Then he met with two producers of Fox in Turkey.<\/p>\n<p>Then <strong>Cenk Soner <\/strong>and <strong>Mehmet Ica\u011fas\u0131o\u011flu<\/strong>, two executives of Disney in Turkey, were invited to the Minister&#8217;s house in Bodrum.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest issue was the digital rights to the movie.<\/p>\n<p>Since it had already been bought by Disney, it would not be available on other digital channels.<\/p>\n<p>With the Minister&#8217;s initiatives, the digital rights of the movie were released, paving the way for talks with Amazon and Netflix.<\/p>\n<p><img \/><\/p>\n<h3>Backstage 2: The film premieres on October 23rd in the biggest hall of AKM<\/h3>\n<p>What surprised and delighted me the most was the decision to hold the premiere of the film at the Atat\u00fcrk Cultural Center in Istanbul.<\/p>\n<p>It will be screened on a giant digital screen on October 23 in AKM&#8217;s 2200-seat largest hall.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism launched an application called &#8220;My Film Heritage&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>All documentary films of Atat\u00fcrk were colorized and cleaned with today&#8217;s technology and put into this application.<\/p>\n<p>I announce it to anyone who is interested.<\/p>\n<p>My last word is this.<\/p>\n<p>I hope this movie will contribute to the formation of a common feeling of unity in our country
