If “7. Koğuştaki Mucize” is a huge success on the streaming video platform, it’s no accident. Mehmet Ada Öztekin’s Turkish feature is a remake of a South Korean film entitled “Miracle in Cell No 7”, released in 2013. Apart from the name resemblance, the story is virtually identical.
Turkey, in 1983
The story takes place one year before the abolition of the death penalty in Turkey in 1984. Mehmet, a mentally handicapped man, raises his daughter Ova alone with his grandmother. Mehmet is one of those poor people forgotten by the system. The story begins on a national holiday in Turkey.
While Mehmet was saving pennies to buy Ova a bag seen in a store, it was an army colonel who beat “Memo” to the punch and took the bag for his daughter named Seda, ignoring the man and his daughter Ova.
A few days later, while tending his herds, “Mémo” meets the colonel’s daughter by chance. She asks Mehmet to catch her and, as a reward, offers him the bag. The man then ran after her.
Unfortunately for him, Seda slips and falls. Her head hits a stone and the little girl dies instantly. Mehmet is then accused of the child’s murder and “unjustly” faces hanging. A well-written script and a race against time to save Mehmet, played by the talented Aras Bulut İynemli, from hanging.
Watching “7. Koğuştaki Mucize”, you become attached to the characters. Mehmet’s love for his daughter Ova, the social injustice he suffers, and the military’s emphasis on “justice” rather than “obedience” all left us breathless. And in this film, every scene is important and tells a story.
Internet users in tears
With its extraordinary story, picture quality and outstanding cast, “7. Koğuştaki Mucize” brought tears to the eyes of the platform’s subscribers. On Twitter, many people are talking about their experiences watching the film.
